The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine recognized Drs. Milagros Silva and Daniel Shalev as Emerging Leaders in Hospice and Palliative Care. This distinction spotlights the outstanding contributions of rising stars in the field of hospice and palliative medicine.

Dr. Milagros Silva is the Medical Director of the Outpatient Palliative Care program and Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Starting her journey with a nursing degree and overcoming skepticism about her pursuit of medical education, she graduated from Georgetown University Medical School and completed her residency in internal medicine. After completing her fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering, she joined Weill Cornell Medicine in 2014, dedicating her efforts to supporting patients with serious illness. She also conducts research improving the use of medical interpreters in hospice and palliative medicine.

Dr. Daniel Shalev, an Assistant Professor of Medicine in both the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, is a triple board-certified psychiatrist and palliative medicine physician. His dual expertise allows him to provide a comprehensive care approach that addresses both the medical and psychological challenges faced by patients and their families. Under Dr. Shalev's guidance, Weill Cornell Medicine has introduced specialized mental health services within its interdisciplinary Outpatient Palliative Care program. This initiative, a rarity in national palliative care programs, serves as both a clinical service and a training site for residents within the IMPACT research program. By integrating psychiatric care with palliative treatment, Dr. Shalev's program ensures that patients receive holistic support tailored to enhance their quality of life, even in the face of life-limiting illnesses.

Congratulations, Drs. Silva and Shalev!
